Whoever Believes Has Eternal Life

This meditation is based on a passage for January 2, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: John 6:41-47

Reflection and Question: Sometimes Jesus spoke in images and stories; at other times He spoke directly. In this passage He does both, expanding on the image of His being the bread of life, filling Holy Communion with power, and declaring simply, “Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life.” My conclusion from this is also simple: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) believers in Jesus have eternal life. LGBT Christians receive Jesus as the bread of life and their lives prove this by the abundant fruit of the Holy Spirit they produce. What does Jesus’ being the bread of heaven mean to you?

Prayer:

Blessed Jesus, Forgive us when we fail to know when You are speaking in poetry and when You are speaking in prose. Just like the people back then, we often get it backwards and wrong. But we trust that You will raise us up on the last day. Amen.
