Where Your Treasure Is

This meditation is based on a passage for May 5, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Matthew 6:19-24

Reflection and Question: This section of the Sermon on the Mount is devoted to teaching believers how to relate to material things. One of the two Biblical quotations in the Harry Potter books is in this passage, the verse carved into the tomb of Dumbledore’s mother and sister, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, p. 325). J.K. Rowling’s choice suggests that the people in our lives are our greatest treasure, not any material thing, and our hearts are still with them even after death. Can you serve both God and wealth? Why or why not?

Prayer: Blessed Spirit of God, open our eyes to the meaning of Jesus’ teaching so that we may be full of light today. Direct our choices in this life so that we store up for ourselves treasures in heaven, deep love between others and us that lasts forever. Amen.
