We Have Received the Spirit that is From God

This meditation is based on a passage for October 3, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: I Corinthians 2:6-16

Reflection and Question: Paul’s purpose here is to inspire the church in Corinth to stop quarreling. One of the areas of contention seems to be that some in the church consider themselves to be wiser in their faith than others. Paul is trying to hold the church together by getting everyone to agree that they have all received the Spirit of God, or, in other words, have the mind of Christ. Paul’s words here are as fresh for our church today as they were then. This is especially true in terms of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender inclusion. For both in Paul’s time and today, unity rests upon respecting the mind of Christ in one another. Who do you need to respect for receiving God’s Spirit?

Prayer: Blessed Spirit of God, we yearn for Your wisdom that is secret and hidden and was before the ages for Your glory. Give us the mind of Christ, we pray, so that we may have the Grace to see in each one the gift bestowed by You alone. Amen.
