They Shall Know There Has Been a Prophet Among Them

This meditation is based on a passage for June 3, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Ezekiel 1:28-3:3

Reflection and Question: Ezekiel was a priest to the people of Israel in exile when he received the call to be a prophet. For me, most striking about the call he describes is God’s clarity about the deafness of the people. It is also striking how God insists that Ezekiel is to speak as God inspires him anyway. What is important to God is that the words be offered to the people through Ezekiel with the invitation to receive them. Charged to set aside fear, Ezekiel absorbs God’s word and finds it to be sweet. He accepts this call to speak to deaf ears. How are we a rebellious house and who are the prophets God sends to us?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Truth Divine, help us to exceed the expectations God has for the people of Israel whom God knows as a rebellious house. Open our ears that we may hear God’s word form the prophets like Ezekiel who are right now in our midst. Amen.
