There Is No Other God Able To Deliver In This Way

This meditation is based on a passage for May 7, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Daniel 3:19-30

Reflection and Question: We return to Daniel and his friends in exile in Babylon. New trouble comes when the king builds a huge golden statue and commands everyone to worship before it. Daniel and his friends cannot do this because it would violate the Ten Commandments. Nebuchadnezzar throws Daniel’s friends into the fiery furnace as punishment for disobeying his command, but they walk away unharmed. After witnessing this miraculous event, the king decrees that all must worship the God of Israel and promotes the three Judeans. When have you been saved from fire by grace?

Prayer: Holy Spirit of Power, we see You as that fourth man Nebuchadnezzar saw in the fiery furnace who, he said, had the appearance of a god. Let us know of Your presence in whatever fiery furnace faces us. We trust we will not be harmed. Amen.
