The Works That I Am Doing Testify on My Behalf
This meditation is based on a passage for March 25, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: John 5:30-47
Reflection and Question: Controversy over Jesus’ actions and words is dogging Him here, early in the Gospel of John. In this passage, Jesus speaks to His critics by applying the same criteria for judgment that He commends to us in our judging of one another: “By their fruits you shall know them.” Here He says, “The very works that I am doing testify on my behalf.” Jesus also claims that Scripture and Moses speak of Him, testifying on His behalf. Faith in Christ comes down to trusting His words, His deeds and His place in the Bible. How deep is your faith that Jesus is sent by God, the Father?
Prayer: Holy Spirit of the living God, Jesus is confident that You gave Him work to do and testify on His behalf. Your inspiration, alone, opens our eyes to Jesus. Abide in us so that we see Him in Scripture and in life, everywhere we look. Amen.
