The Pioneer of Our Salvation
This meditation is based on a passage for May 13, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: Hebrews 2:5-18
Reflection and Question: The image of Jesus as the pioneer of our salvation offers many rich possibilities in our minds of Jesus going before us, from Lewis and Clark in the western wilderness to the space probes that sent back pictures of Saturn. The writer here is clear that Jesus is going before us through suffering. More precisely, “Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.” In this life, there is no getting around suffering which tests our faith. But Jesus shows us the way to salvation, having gone before us. How are you being tested?
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help us to see Jesus who tasted death for everyone so that we might take our place as His brother and sister. Free us from slavery to the fear of death and from the daily test of our faithfulness, that we may join Christ today. Amen.
