The Moment of Jesus’ Death
Text: Mark 15:33-39
Reflection and Question: Every line here is filled with extra meaning, as noted in the New Oxford Annotated Bible. Darkness from noon to three is a disruption of nature preparing for God’s judgment. Jesus’ words are from Psalm 22, a lament. The people continue to miss the meaning of the moment. The tearing of the curtain in the temple removes a protection from God but also opens direct contact with God. And a Roman (judged an abomination by the Jews in those times) proclaims the Gospel. In the midst of all this, “Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.” What aspect of this moment is most important and vital for you?
Prayer: Therefore, dear Jesus, since I cannot pay You,
I do adore You, and will ever praise You,
Think on Your pity and Your love unswerving, Not my deserving.” Amen.
This meditation is based on the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
