The First Creation Story

Text: Genesis 1:1-2:3

Reflection and Question: Scholars agree that this vision of creation was written after the return of the Jewish exiles to Jerusalem. This priestly source reflects the expansion of their understanding of God from a tribal defender to the creator and sustainer of all. The emphasis on male and female being made in God’s image is the foundation for the United Presbyterian Church’s conclusion in 1974 that equality of men and women is an essential of our Christian faith, and therefore both men and women are qualified for leadership in the church. How do you reflect the image of God?

Prayer: Eternal God of All, we pause in wonder at the grandeur of Your creation, from the smallest microbe to the farthest star. We join with You in declaring it all good. May our thanks and praise join the music of the spheres to honor You. Amen.
