Praise God, for God Is Good
This meditation is based on a passage for February 14, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: Psalm 135
Reflection and Question: Happy Valentine’s Day! Psalm 135 strikes me as a Valentine’s Day poem of love for God. From start to finish this psalm extols the goodness and power of God, highlighting both God’s creation of heaven and earth, as well as God’s rescue of the Hebrews from Egypt and the protection of Israel. The poet compares God to the idols whose weakness is obvious, and declares that “the Lord is great; our Lord is above all gods.” Shouts of praise and blessing start off this psalm and end it with sheer delight in God from beginning to end. What say you in your valentine card to God?
Surrender yourselves to love!
Blessed be You, O Beloved, Breath of our breath! Praises be to your Holy Name!
Amen. (Nan Merrill, Psalms for Praying, p. 285)
