People Are Slaves to Whatever Has Mastered Them

This meditation is based on a passage for December 17, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: 2 Peter 2:17-22

Reflection and Question: All the Christians I know would agree with the main teaching here about how to spot a false prophet: “People are slaves to whatever masters them.” Because this is so, we are all devoted to increasing our knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, having no interest in backsliding. The vivid quote of Proverbs 25:11 is enough to keep us all focused on following Christ. The LGBT faithful I know are as committed to this Christian path as all other followers of Christ. Who is the master to whom you are enslaved — Christ?

Prayer: Almighty God, it is so easy to slide away from living in service to Jesus Christ, our Lord. The enticements of wealth, entertainment, or simple distraction can sneak up on us. We seek only to have Jesus as our master. Please make it so. Amen.
