Paul’s Judgment of Sexual Immorality

Text: 1 Corinthians 5:1-8

Reflection and Question: Paul’s judgment of a man living with his father’s wife is unequivocal: this is sin. This is universally condemned says Paul, including among the pagans. In the face of this, Paul commends to the Corinthians, and to us, the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. And that positive statement includes the loving, sincere and deeply moral GLBT relationships that we see in friends and family today. How do you distinguish between sin and sincerity?

Prayer: Jesus Christ, our paschal lamb, it is a good thing to clean out the old yeast of malice and evil and to celebrate the festival with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Forgive our boasting; cleanse us; be our Purity. Amen.

This meditation is based on the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
