Paul’s Hymn to Jesus’ Coming
Text: Philippians 2:5-11
Reflection and Question: I really like the way the Daily Lectionary avoids the traditional readings for Christmas and instead cuts to the quick with this awesome description of what God did in Jesus, and exactly who Jesus is. Jesus’ humility and obedience are as manifest in the Baby Jesus in the manger as they are on the cross. While the kings and shepherds paint a picture of exaltation, the teaching here is more direct: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.” Jesus’ mind is revealed this Holy Night—how are you of that same mind?
Prayer: Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, and usher in the morning.
You shepherds, shudder not with fright, But hear the angel’s warning.
This child, now weak in infancy, Our confidence and joy shall be;
The power of Satan breaking, our peace eternal making.
(Johann Rist 1641 The Presbyterian Hymnal 26)
