My Help Comes From God

This meditation is based on a passage for March 1, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Psalm 121

Reflection and Question: This is among my favorite psalms because the first verse was the one I recited when my name was called every Sunday in chapel at summer camp: “I lift up mine eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help” (King James Version). I liked the way the mountains were an image for God and that I left unsaid the actual statement of faith: “My help cometh from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” This let me keep the solid faith of the poet close to my heart. By taking these words into my heart as my own I slowly came to share this unshakeable trust. When has God kept you from evil?

Prayer: I to the hill will lift my eyes; From whence shall come my aid?
My help is from the Lord alone, Who heaven and earth has made.
From evil God will keep you safe, Provide for all your need;
Your going out, your coming in, God will forever lead.
(Scottish Psalter, 1615)
