My Believe Out Loud Piece: A Prayer Upon The Adoption Of “Marriage Between Two People”

Last week, my church, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), reached a historic moment. Ten years after being put on trial by my church for presiding over the wedding of two women, I witnessed that same church embrace LGBT people and their families by affirming marriage as a “unique commitment between two people.” Though I am still in the deep quiet of sabbatical, I found myself called to reflect and write on this momentous occasion.

What came naturally was a prayer – of thanks for the joy this new era in our church will surely bring, and for continued strength to walk in the way of God. For surely, our work is not yet done. Even as we celebrate today, we must think of tomorrow and how we can hold all perspectives within our church together as we discern God’s will for the future of our church.

I am humbled, as always, that Believe Out Loud published my thoughts on their site. Below is an excerpt from that post:

Today, the words of Matthew 19:26 ring true for me: with You, all things are possible. Hallelujah! What a privilege to be one of the cloud of witnesses rejoicing in this new day! Thank You for this awesome opportunity to participate in a moment of true reformation.
