Moses’ Spirit Is Imparted to Others

This meditation is based on a passage for May 15, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Numbers 11:16-17, 24-29

Reflection and Question: This story may be the first recorded incident of clergy burnout. Moses is upset by the complaints of the people about the manna from heaven. More patient than Moses here, God tells him to gather seventy elders together. Then God takes of Moses’ spirit and puts it on them, even on two who were chosen but missed the meeting. Moses did not need to lead the people alone, nor do clergy today if we are willing to share our spirits with others. When we are willing, God will spread our spirits beyond ourselves. When have you shared your spirit and burden with others?

Prayer: Blessed Spirit of the Living God, teach us through Your good servant Moses and Your people complaining of Your care in the wilderness. When our leaders are burnt out, spread their spirit among us so that we may share their burden. Amen.
