Like a Wise Man Who Built His House Upon a Rock

This meditation is based on a passage for March 5, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Matthew 7:22-29

Reflection and Question: The Sermon on the Mount is coming to an end. Jesus uses the vivid image of building on sand or on rock to commend to His listeners the interpretation of the law He has set before them. His teachings are the solid rock upon which we can build out lives. If anybody wants to understand how lesbian gay bisexual transgender (LGBT) Christians are able to remain in the church in the face of aggressive, wounding judgment proclaimed by some, they do best to grasp that these LGBT faithful build their faith upon the rock of Jesus Christ, His example and teaching. How are you building upon rock, not sand?

Prayer: Jesus, Beloved Teacher, we are as astounded at Your words as those first listeners on the grassy hillside. We aim to build our house of life upon You, our Rock and our Redeemer. When we slide and slip into the sand, pull us up, we pray. Amen.
