Jesus’ Words on Wealth
Text: Matthew 6:19-24
Reflection and Question: Most people will probably agree with Jesus’ conclusion that, “You can not serve God and wealth.” And yet our consumer economy relies upon our storing up treasure here on earth — and even most Christians devote much of daily life to serving “wealth” rather than God. The point is humbling, for our eyes are mostly on earthly gain, which, in the end, is darkness indeed. What does it mean “to store up treasure in heaven”? Is your heart there?
Prayer: Most loving God, when we rise in the morning our purpose is to serve You and to store up treasure in heaven. As a day progresses our eyes wander more and more to the ads all around us. Our hearts follow. Forgive us, dear God. Amen.
