Jesus with the Pharisee, Nicodemus

This meditation is based on a passage for August 9, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: John 3:1-21

Reflection and Question: Embedded in this amazing exchange between Jesus and Nicodemus, the curious leader of the Jews, comes the verse that one ardent believer has managed to place in front of the TV cameras at important sporting events for decades. Here is what 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have everlasting life.” This powerful statement applies just as strongly to the GLBT faithful who believe in Jesus as it does to anyone else in His church. What part of this complex conversation is most striking to you?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Love Divine, we know that You blow where You choose and that being born of water and of You is the entrance into Your kingdom. Inspire our understanding of Jesus’ words here so that our deeds may be done in You. Amen.
