Jesus Says More About Material Possessions

Text: Matthew 6:25-34

Reflection and Question: Jesus’ trust in God here can clash with our real responsibility to put food on the table and a roof over our heads. His assurance that all we need will come if we set our minds on God’s justice displays a faith that is way beyond most of us. And yet, some people succeed in this deep faithfulness. They begin by accepting that “tomorrow will look after itself” so that they can focus on service to God today. They live deeply in the truth that today “has enough troubles of its own.” How do you turn these lovely words from platitudes into concrete action?

Prayer: Dearest Jesus, make these words more than words, we pray. Stir our hearts to consider the lilies of the field and the birds of the air so that we may trust in God as they do. May we trust that God knows our needs and will supply. Amen.

This meditation is based on the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
