Jesus’ Promise of the Holy Spirit

Text: John 14:21-29

Reflection and Question: Jesus speaks here of the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit (also translated as – Advocate or Helper or Comforter) fell on the disciples on Pentecost and also on Cornelius and on Paul. The Holy Spirit continues to “give us courage to hear the voices of people long silenced (Brief Statement of Faith, The Book of Confessions). Where and how has the Holy Spirit been present for you, recently?

Prayer: Blessed Jesus, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit who filled the people on Pentecost and falls upon your children afresh all the time. May Your Spirit continue to remind us of all You said so that we may live as Your disciples, too. Amen

The Brief Statement of Faith (1983) is one of the historic documents that guide our faith in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

This meditation is based on the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
