I Want You to Understand This Mystery

This meditation is based on a passage for April 16, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Romans 11:25-36

Reflection and Question: Paul has reached the end of his huge effort to explain how Christians of Jewish and Gentile ancestry relate with one another in the Body of Christ. He observes that both Jews and Gentiles have been disobedient so that God’s purposes may be accomplished. Paul acknowledges that the way God works is an unsearchable, inscrutable mystery for us all. And we are all from God and through God and to God, according to Paul. In his time, the sensitive division was between Jew and Gentile, and it was overcome in God. What divisions does God overcome in our time?

Prayer: Almighty God, we confess our disobedience and pray for your merciful forgiveness. We confess the difficulty we experience in knowing that You are merciful to all. Help us, dear God, to fix our eyes on You and give You the glory forever. Amen.
