I Am the Light of the World
This meditation is based on a passage for August 28, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: John 8:12-20
Reflection and Question: When Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world,” He binds Himself together with the innermost heart of the story of God and God’s chosen people. “I am who I am,” declares God to Moses from the burning bush and God tells Moses to say to the Israelites, “I am has sent you” to verify his call. No wonder Jesus’ listeners questioned His claim to being the light to guide the whole world, a much grander claim than what Moses heard from the God of Israel. But Jesus speaks with authority and complete conviction that He has the power of God to know and to judge. How is Jesus your light?
Prayer: Jesus, our Brother and Savior, be our light, we pray. As You know us through and through, judge us with kindness. Guide us in Your gentle and strong ways so that, by following You, we come to know Your Father and to do Your will. Amen.
