How Awesome Are Your Deeds!

This meditation is based on a passage for April 20, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Psalm 66

Reflection and Question: This testimony of praise and thanksgiving to the workings of God overflows with joy. One of the repeated words for God is “awesome” and it refers not just to who God is but to God’s deeds in this world. For Israel to be brought from slavery to the spacious place of Canaan and for the prayers of the psalmist to be answered are both awesome. Through this praise, the poet is paying vows made when in trouble, offering him or herself to God, and proclaiming God’s steadfast love to others through the ages, even to us. For what awesome deeds in your life do you bless God?

Prayer: Bless our God, you peoples; make the voice of the people be heard.
God holds our souls in life, and will not let our feet slip.
You let enemies ride over our heads; we went through fire and water;
But you brought us out into a place of refreshment.
