He Has Scattered the Proud in the Imagination of their Hearts

This meditation is based on a passage for December 21, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Luke 1:39-56

Reflection and Question: Mary rushes off to her cousin Elizabeth who has her own astonishment at being pregnant in her old age. Then, Luke writes that Mary speaks one of the greatest affirmations of faith in all literature, the Magnificat, worth memorizing and pondering. My favorite line in the King James Version, is the comment on the powerful, which resonates for me over and over still today: “He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.” Mary also establishes the central theme of Luke: “God has lifted up the lowly.” Both Elizabeth and Mary exemplify that. How does your spirit rejoice in God?

Prayer: He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.
(Luke 1:53-55, The King James Version)
