Greet Those Who Love Us in the Faith

This meditation is based on a passage for March 12, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Titus 3:1-15

Reflection and Question: I expect this last chapter in Titus was a favorite of the loyalists in the American Revolution. I can hear them quoting Titus 3:1: “Remind them to be subject to rules and authorities, to be obedient.” At some point for many, other parts of Scripture took precedence over this one. At the same time, it is prudent to pay one’s taxes and to obey the traffic lights since we are subject to those rules. Life is complex; choices need to be made. Opening ourselves to the Holy Spirit and devoting ourselves to good works are the most important. How do you devote yourself to good works?

Prayer: Holy Spirit of Christ, renew us by Your Grace so that we may be gentle, showing every courtesy to everyone. We trust Your goodness, loving kindness and mercy. We pledge to devote ourselves to good works, profitable to everyone. Amen.
