God’s Foolishness

Text: 1 Corinthians 1:20-3

Reflection and Question: Jesus’ repeated lesson that the last shall be first and the first last is echoed by Paul in his fervent words to the Christians in Corinth. Christ on the cross appeared foolish to the learned among both the Jews and the Greeks. But Paul reminds them that “God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.” Our humility in the face of Jesus Christ is called forth by Paul’s preaching. How are you made humble by God’s wisdom?

Prayer: Most Loving Spirit, we confess that too often we get it backwards. Too often we choose by human standards, not by Yours. Fill our hearts with what is wise and strong in Your eyes, so that our only boast may be in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

This meditation is based on the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
