God Reigns
Text: Psalm 99
Reflection and Question: It is hard for us to conceive what the role of a king meant in Biblical times because royalty now is so wholly ceremonial. One significant principle of the Protestant Reformation was the insistence that God alone rules and that, with holy inspiration, people faithful to God as Sovereign then devise a structure to govern. This Psalm is one to return to when the leadership of a nation comes into question. Indeed, this was the logic of the founders of the United States of America. What does it mean for you that God is your King?
Prayer: Sovereign God, You alone are holy. You alone rule all creation with power and justice. We stand in awe of Your actions of old, testified to by prophets and priests. Reign in our hearts, we pray, just as You are enthroned on the cherubim. Amen.
This meditation is based on the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
