For God’s Steadfast Love Endures Forever

This meditation is based on a passage for May 1 , 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Psalm 136

Reflection and Question: The second half of every verse in this hymn of praise is “For God’s steadfast love endures forever.” As I read this hymn, I can hear the rhythm of call and response as the worship leader sings out the first phrase and the congregation repeats back a lovely affirmation of God’s love. The leader tells the story of creation as well as the story of the liberation of Israel from Egypt and their establishment in God’s promised land. The psalm begins and ends with thanks for God’s steadfast love. What stories that display God’s enduring love would you add to this psalm?

Let us with a gladsome mind, Praise the Lord who is so kind:
For God’s mercies shall endure, Ever faithful, ever sure.
