Wisdom is the Tree of Life

This meditation is based on a passage for May 24, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Proverbs 3:11-20

Reflection and Question: It is completely appropriate that this ode to the virtues of Wisdom uses the feminine pronoun. In both Hebrew and Greek, the words for “Wisdom” are feminine. As Wisdom, God created the earth and the heavens. Human happiness comes from laying hold of Her. Like the good wife in Proverbs 31:10, Wisdom is “more precious than jewels.” The development of Wisdom as an aspect of God in Proverbs is a clear example of God being just as feminine as masculine, or, better said, beyond the human characteristics of gender. How do you grasp Wisdom as the Tree of Life?

Prayer: Holy Wisdom, how awesome that You delight in us! Though You founded the earth and established the heavens, You are also near to us and offer us long life with Your right hand. Guide us on Your paths that lead to peace, we pray. Amen.
