When the Spirit of Truth Comes

This meditation is based on a passage for April 29, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: John 16:1-15

Reflection and Question: This passage tells us that after Jesus’ ascension to the side of God, the Advocate and the Spirit of truth, will come. This is what Jesus promises us. “I still have many things to say to you,” says Jesus, “but you cannot bear them now.” I trust that new ideas come via the teaching of this Spirit who guides us into all truth. For example, right now, I see a new idea coming to our world through Jesus’ Spirit that is inspiring an understanding that God gives people different gender identities and sexual orientations. The Spirit helps us see that same gender partners are natural, good, and right for these people. What has the Spirit of Truth declared to you?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Truth divine, dawn upon this soul of mine;
Word of God and inward light, wake my spirit, clear my sight.
(Holy Spirit, Truth Divine, The United Methodist Hymnal, 465)
