To See If There Are Any Who Are Wise

This meditation is based on a passage for December 15, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Psalm 53

Reflection and Question: This psalm reminds us that one’s own time and place in the world is not the first time and place where people despaired of the direction and quality of life. It is especially striking to me that both I and those who disagree with me in the church identify deeply with the cry of the psalmist here, “There is no one who does good, no, not one.” Likewise, the assurance in the conclusion here that God will restore the fortunes of Israel can also be ours, both of ours. And, just as it must have done then, this sustains our hope and heartens us. When have you wondered if there are any who are wise?

Prayer: Blessed Holy Spirit, make us wise in our time. Spare us the desperate conclusion of the foolish, “There is no God.” Help us to seek after You and to do good. Hear us when we call so that we may rejoice and be glad as we serve You today. Amen.
