The Conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount

Text: Matthew 7:22-29

Reflection and Question: Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with two warnings. First, there will be people who claim faithful service to Jesus as Lord, to whom Jesus will say, “I never knew you; out of my sight!” Second, Jesus uses the image of houses built on rock and sand to illustrate that His teachings are the strong foundation of the house built on rock — a warning to those who do not live by his teachings. Together these remind us that only in living by Jesus’ teachings do we become His disciples. What in Jesus’ teachings most challenges you?

Prayer: Holy Jesus, You know we want to build our house upon the strong rock of Your will and teachings. And yet we confess that, too often, we follow the easier way. Save us from the crash of our foolishness, pulling us back to Your will and way. Amen.
