Jesus Has Obtained a More Excellent Ministry

This meditation is based on a passage for June 10, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Hebrews 8:1-13

Reflection and Question: Jesus obtains a more excellent ministry here, which is being the mediator of a new covenant based on “better promises.” The prophet Jeremiah’s stirring poetry is quoted to describe this covenant that will be written on their hearts. All the people shall know God who promises to know their sins no more. The law will be in the minds and hearts of God’s people. What strikes me is that there are no qualifying circumstances barring any believers from this covenant in Christ. We are all on a level ground to know God and for God to forgive our sins. How does Jesus mediate this new covenant for you?

Prayer: Great God, we turn to Christ as our high priest. His more excellent ministry leads us to rely upon Your promise that You will be our God and we shall be Your people. With Your law on our hearts, we will serve You all our days. Amen.
