Hold Fast to the Traditions

This meditation is based on a passage for May 22, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17

Reflection and Question: In my church, there are disagreements on very important things, just as there were between Jesus and the Pharisees, and within the early church as attested to by Paul. The writer of this letter to the church in Thessalonica means to encourage those with whom he agrees in the disputes roiling that community. Then, as now, the different views claim Christ as their savior and the traditions as the source of their positions. In due time, God reveals the view that is the fruit of salvation and, meanwhile, comforts us all. How can we disagree but join together in Christ’s good work?

Prayer: Beloved Jesus, all of us feel called by Your good news and desire to glorify Your Holy Name. And we disagree mightily over many things, standing firm in what we have been taught. Strengthen us all in every good work and word. Amen
