Glorifying God in the Body

This meditation is based on a passage for March 4, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Reflection and Question: “Fornication” is one of those old words, like “abomination,” that is thrown around as an insult toward GLBT people. But the contrast Paul highlights here is between loving unions that honor God and prostitution. Nowhere here does he reference the gender of the partners. And our experience today simply reinforces that this is true: I know many devout GLBT Christians who know their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and whose loving relationships reflect the glory of God. How is your body a member of Christ?

Prayer: Eternal God, our Creator, thank You for the gift of physical being, for our bodies as a temple of Your Holy Spirit. We are not our own. Knowing we are bought at a price, may we glorify You in the unity of our body and spirit. Amen.
