Freedom, Truth and Believing in Jesus

Text: John 8:33-47

Reflection and Question: Jesus gets testy in this part of the ongoing dialogue between Jesus and “the Jews” in this section of John. They are all Jews talking together about freedom and being children of Abraham. Jesus, as usual, jumps to another level when he speaks of being free from sin. When those listening cannot understand, Jesus pops off, calling them children of the devil who cannot accept what He says because they are not from God, as He is. This dichotomy between God and the devil challenges us all. How would Jesus receive a GLBT person who believes in Him?

Prayer: Beloved Jesus, we bring our questions to You just like the Jews do in John. Answer us so that our minds may be at peace, believing in You as light and truth. Free us from all misconceptions and from our sin, securing us as God’s children. Amen.

This meditation is based on the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
