David Keeps the Covenant with Jonathan

Text: 2 Samuel 9:1-13

Reflection and Question: In the midst of stories about David’s successful military exploits, we learn that David also continues to keep his covenant with Jonathan by seeking out Saul and Jonathan’s relatives. He establishes a household for Mephibosheth and his servants, while always providing a place at the King’s table for Jonathan’s lame son. The writers preserving the story of David worked hard to include these personal details along with the kingly aspects of the narrative. In the midst of your busy life, do you keep your commitments to others as faithfully as David does here?

Prayer: Most high and loving God, You know our every move, both out in the open for all to see and hidden away from the eyes of others. May You find us as firm in our promises as David is here to Jonathan and his family, always to Your glory, Amen.

This meditation is based on the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
