David Becomes a Rival to Saul

Text: 1 Samuel 18:5-16

Reflection and Question:As a warrior in Saul’s army and as a musician whose playing gives Saul comfort, David’s very success in serving the king feeds Saul’s fear and anger. Saul watches his lieutenant rise in popularity and power while David is simply following Saul’s own orders. Both men are very aware that God has departed from Saul and favors David. When you see the success of others around you, how do you react?

Prayer:Holy Spirit, Love Divine, Saul did slay his thousands but all he could hear were the cries of the crowd praising David for slaying his ten thousands. Teach us how to accept Your will by learning from Saul what not to do. Amen.

This meditation is based on the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
